Tip 1.13: Changing the Verse List Sort Order

After you perform a search, the verse list in the Search Window shows your search hits sorted according to a generally-accepted book order, Genesis through Revelation. But perhaps you are teaching a class on Philippians, and consistently want to view the search results in Philippians before viewing the rest of the search results? In this Classroom Tip we will look at how to change the verse list sort order and describe some sort order strategies that you may find useful in your classroom and for personal study.

How to Change the Verse List Sort Order

To change the verse list sort order in the Search Window, select View | Change Verse List Sort Order on the main BibleWorks menu. The verse list sort order is specific to each version.

  • In the Book Sort Order window select the version for which you want to change the sort order. In the list of book names, select the books you wish to move in the list. You can choose multiple books by holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard as you select the book names.

  • Use the up and down arrows to the right of book names to move the books to the sort location you want.

  • After you have completed moving the book names to your preferred location, click the Enable checkbox, then select the Save button. Click OK to close the window. Now your search hits will display in your preferred sort order.

  • To return to the default sort order, open the Book Sort Order window again and uncheck the Enable checkbox. Recheck the box when you want to return to your modified sort order.
  • If you decide you no longer want to keep your modified sort order, you can press the Reset button in the Book Sort Order window to return to the default sort order.

Verse List Sort Order Strategies

  • Changing the version order for the book study class you are teaching. If you are teaching on Philippians, you may want to move Philippians to the top of your verse list sort order. In this way your Philippians search hits will always be at the top of the Search Window. This makes it easier for you and your students to see the most relevant search hits.

  • You may want to change the sort of books that you wish to group collectively. For example, if you are studying Luke and Acts, you may want to move Acts to appear immediately after Luke in the sort order. Or you may want to move all the Johannine books together.
  • You may want to change the WTT and WTM sort orders to correspond to the book order in the printed Hebrew text.
  • You may want to change the LXT and BLM sort orders to correspond to the book order in the printed LXX text.
  • You may want to change the sort order of versions that are based upon the LXX to correspond to the book order in the printed texts.
  • You can have different sort orders for the different versions you are displaying in the Browse Window. The sort order is applied to the search version, not the display versions. For example, perhaps you want to have the NT search results show up first for the BGT and BGM search versions, but you want to use the default sort order for your English texts.
